Born to Rival Venice

The concept of the festival was born out of a desire for artistic independence. Before 1939, Jean Zay, the French Minister for Education and Fine Arts, envisioned a major cultural event in France that could rival the politically influenced International Venice Film Festival.

Though delayed by the outbreak of World War II, the dream was finally realized in 1946, more than a year after the war ended, marking the glorious first edition of the event in Cannes. Interestingly, the glamorous title we know today is relatively new: it was simply called the "International Film Festival" until it was officially rebranded as the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.

The Festival Creates Legends

Cannes is not just about screening movies; it is the ultimate stage where modern myths are born and cinematic history is written in real-time.

1955 – 1956

A Royal Fairytale: Hollywood royalty met actual royalty. Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier during the 1955 Festival. By the eve of the 1956 Festival opening, they were married.

1956

The Birth of Bardot: The Brigitte Bardot myth was instantly cemented when Roger Vadim’s legendary film "Et Dieu créa la femme" premiered on the Croisette.

2005

The Iconic Slip: Sophie Marceau entered the pantheon of Cannes legends with an accidental wardrobe malfunction, revealing her left shoulder to an audience of stunned, flashing photographers.
